Students aged between 11 and 19 were awarded as “Black Sea Wakers of the Future” during a competition organized by the Municipality of Shabla and the Institute of Fish Resources – Varna. The youngsters had to propose a substantiated solution to an environmental problem and present it in the form of a presentation. The jury evaluated their concern for natural resources and their active attitude towards their conservation.

36 students from all over the country submitted projects, individually or in teams. They were evaluated by a jury of representatives from the Institute of Fish Resources – Varna, the Academy of Agriculture, the Public Centre for Environment and Sustainable Development and the Sea Club.

The awards were presented by Ilian Iliev from the Public Centre for Environment and Sustainable Development on the International Day of the Black Sea.

In the category “Water Pollution” were awarded Sibel Selyaydin, 13 years old from Ruse for her project “Plastic Waste in the Black Sea”, and Vanya Nusi – a ninth grader from ČPTP “Raiko Tsonchev” – Dobrich. Philip Rzhgiev from Belene and Preslava Nenova from Nessebar received special awards.

In “Resources (flora and fauna)” the prize went to Martina Dimitrova, who analyzed “Bioresources of the world ocean – opportunities and threats”. The second place was taken by a team of fifth graders from “Asen Zlatarov” Secondary School – town of. The second team of the team was from Shabla – Ivana Angelova, Petko Frangov and Ralitsa Marinova.

The prizes went to Yanislav Donchev from Belene and Yvonne Velikova from Shabla.

The best projects in the category “Global Warming” were those of Filip Nastev from Balchik, who worked on the problem “Energy from sea waves”, and of Hristiana Mladenova from Veliko Tarnovo, who wrote about “Global warming – what is the impact on the world”.

The team of sixth-graders from Burgas – Jasmina and Nadezhda Kisikov, and the seventh-grader from Shabla – Deniz Hussein, received special awards.

The awards in the category “Food of the Future” were given to Ivaylo Mihov, 9th grade from Shabla for the project “Globalization of the food market” and Elena Mincheva, 5th grade from Belene for “The Future of Food”.

The prizes were awarded to David Marchev, 6th grade, from Shabla for “Superfoods of the Black Sea” and Daniela Dimova, 8th grade, from PGIT “Racho Stoyanov” for “Food of the Future”.

The winning projects will receive an experience – a day in the municipality of Shabla with a walk along the rocky shore of the village of Tyulenovo (kayaking, weather permitting), a visit to the Shabla Lighthouse and Green Education Center, the Archaeological Complex Durankulak – Hamandjia with bird watching and prizes.
