One of the most recognizable vessels of the international environmental organization Greenpeace, the “Arctic Sunrise”, has docked in Varna. For more than five decades, the ship has participated in expeditions and international missions dedicated to marine environmental protection, becoming a symbol of efforts to protect the world’s oceans.
During the event, representatives of the organization shared the history of the “Arctic Sunrise” and its role in campaigns aimed at protecting marine ecosystems. Captain Pep Barba shared his experience from voyages in the Arctic, Antarctic, and the Black Sea, and emphasized the need to preserve these vulnerable marine regions for future generations.
The “Arctic Sunrise” remained at the Marine Station until August 10 and was open to visitors. Visitors could tour the ship and learn about its history and activities. On August 7 at 9:00 PM, the documentary film “Black Sea”, dedicated to the richness and challenges of the marine ecosystem, was screened on board.
The event was attended by Varna Deputy Mayor Snezhana Apostolova, representatives of “Greenpeace”, Captain Pep Bardal, and members of the international and Bulgarian crew of the “Arctic Sunrise”.
Deputy Mayor Snezhana Apostolova emphasized that for Varna, the Black Sea is an inseparable part of the city’s history, development, and identity. According to her, every initiative aimed at protecting the marine environment is an opportunity to unite the efforts of institutions, organizations, and citizens in caring for this wealth.
