An alley with linden trees was created in the courtyard of the largest medical institution in North-Eastern Bulgaria – UMBAL “St. Marina” in Varna. The six trees were planted and strengthened during two volunteer actions of the Community Center for Environment and Sustainable Development, in conjunction with MiaZoo’s CashON campaign. The last one was held on the International Earth Day – April 22, 2024. The ambition of environmentalists is to plant at least six more linden trees on the southern side of the path used for walking by patients of the hospital.
The choice of the yard of UMBAL “St. Marina” came about after a study of the procedure and talks with the municipal administration in search of free city land for afforestation. It turned out that planting a legal tree on municipal land in Varna is quite complicated. This is also one of the reasons why ecologists turn to the management of the medical facility, where the afforestation procedure is less bureaucratized.
The funds for the purchase of the young saplings were donated by MiaZoo. For every courier delivery box that the company’s customers return, the company allocates 30 cents to the cause of reforestation. The collected funds are donated to the “Leaf” fund at the Public Center for Environment and Sustainable Development – EcoVarna, for planting trees. Thus, the benefits for nature are at least twofold – no trees are destroyed for the production of new cartons and urban areas are reforested.
