The bee Deer, part of the educational module “Get to know the bees, protect nature!”, goes to schools and kindergartens in Varna and Dobrich. She is waiting for invitations from teachers and directors of educational institutions, kindergartens, children’s parties to show children her home and life in the bee colony.

Along with her is the environmental education specialist from the Public Centre for Environment and Sustainable Development Ellen Sabatini, who has been beekeeping in Bulgaria for 18 years. On behalf of the beekeeper, she shows the children what’s in a hive, what tools and equipment the beekeeper uses, what the hive is like, what the different bee products smell and look like… The children can put on the beekeeper’s clothes and take out one by one the combs from a real hive, where there are countless questions about the precious insects. Thus touching, smelling, listening, looking, pulling the sting of the Deer, they gradually learn not to be afraid, but to love and appreciate the bees. Because they understand how hard they work to have something to put on our table.

Bees do the pollination of about 80% of the plants that are food for animals and humans. The aim of the educational module “Get to know bees, protect nature!” is to show children in a fun way their importance for biodiversity and life on Earth.

The module is developed according to French educational methodology and adapted into Bulgarian by Ellen Sabatini. It is available in three different versions – for children up to 7 years old, for primary and junior high school students, as well as for high school students and adults who want to dive deeper into the knowledge of beekeeping.

The module is accompanied by a short film “Life in a spoonful of honey”, which takes viewers to the beekeeping farm of Deer in the Shablen village of Ezerets:

During the warmer months, bee tours are offered there for young and old curiosity seekers, who can observe through a glass hive how the bees work, spin a real centrifuge and taste honey bread.

Listen to the interview with Ellen Sabatini on the “Is there a Megdan” programme on BNR:

The educational module of the Public Centre for Environment and Sustainable Development was developed under the project “Know your bees, protect your future!”, which is implemented with the financial support of Vivacom Regional Grant.
