A nine-year-old student from Varna celebrated his birthday with deposit party cups instead of disposable plastic ones. This is the first deposit of reusable cups implemented for a mini party in the city. Typically, organizations are interested in depositing festival cups for larger events.
The 12 cups have a nautical design and a comfortable 425 ml handle. They were provided by the Public Centre for Environment and Sustainable Development for a deposit of £60, which was refunded on return. This actually saved the birthday boy’s family budget between BGN 3 and BGN 12 depending on the type of cups he would have used – cardboard, plastic or plastic with a lid. At the same time, the environment was not polluted with non-recyclable plastic waste (cardboard cups are adulterated with plastic and are also not recyclable), which decomposes in the environment over a period of between 200 and 500 years. A few years ago, scientists found microplastics in the bodies of newborn babies. The chemical synthetic agents in it cause hormonal, reproductive problems and cancers.
“The use of reusable cups is much more hygienic than that of disposable plastic ones. The disposable ones are clamped on the rim to take them apart from each other, from where one drinks, the birthday boy’s mother said. – Also, they are lightweight and very easy for children to knock over, whereas the reusable ones are made of a harder, heavier plastic and this happens less often.”
“My birthday cups had pretty pictures and a big handle. My friends really liked them,” said 9-year-old David Petrov.
The children’s birthday party was at one of the city’s famous party halls, where entertainers organize fun for the guests and the host brings the food and drinks. They are usually distributed in disposable cups and plates, which are then thrown away.
