Enter our fun hive and learn why bees are so important for the future of the Earth!”. This is the message of the innovative educational module “Get to know bees, protect nature” of the Public Centre for Environment and Sustainable Development. This autumn, it is going on a journey to schools and kindergartens in Varna and Dobrich.

Its first stop is the fifth edition of the “Festival of Arts and Crafts – Dobrich, Autumn 2024”. On 4 and 5 October, a special stand in Dobrich’s Svoboda Square will present an educational box in the shape of a beehive and a three-dimensional bee to introduce the morphology of pollinators.

The next stop of the fun science is Dora Gabe kindergarten in Shabla. On 10 October at 10.30 a.m. there will be an open lesson, to which educators from the region are also invited. Participation is by pre-registration here.

The educational module includes a pedagogical box – a hive full of honeycombs with educational questions about the life of bees. The enlarged 3D model of a bee has detachable legs, stinger and proboscis which are real fun for the kids.

In the form of a game with curious questions children will immerse themselves in the beehive, learn about the structure of bees, the organization of the bee colony and the work of the beekeeper. They will examine under a magnifying glass a worker bee, a queen bee and a drone. They will touch real beekeeping tools.

The module “Get to know the bees, protect nature” is based on a French educational methodology and adapted into Bulgarian by environmental education specialist and local beekeeper Helene Sabatini. It is accompanied by an educational short film “Life in a spoonful of honey”, designed for junior high and high school students.

If you would like the “bee” to visit your school, daycare or learning center, you can make a request at info@ecovarna.info. During the warmer months of the year, children can also visit the “Bee Garden” in the village of Ezerets, municipality of Shabla, where they can get acquainted, besides the educational module, with the work in a real bee farm.

The development of the educational module was made possible by the project “Know the bees, protect your future!”, which is implemented with the financial support of “Vivacom Regional Grant”.
