Public Center for Environment and Sustainable Development strongly opposes the construction of an installation for thermal treatment of waste of the company “Ecosonic” Ltd. in Devnya. The written objection was sent to the Regional Inspectorate of Environment and Water (RIEW) in Varna. The installation is a specialized incinerator with a rotary kiln for waste incineration with a capacity of up to 4.0 t / h or 95 t / 24h. In addition to household waste, it provides for the incineration of non-hazardous industrial as well as hazardous waste, medical waste and animal by-products.
In February of this year RIEW-Varna completed the procedure for the expansion of another incinerator – that of the company “EcoSafe” Ltd. The investor’s wish was to include new codes for combustion waste, including hazardous waste such as asbestos, petroleum products, solid exhaust gas treatment containing hazardous substances, oil filters, brake fluids and antifreeze, etc.
The manager of EcoSafe OOD and Ecosonic EOOD is the same person – Stanislava Evtimova, and the companies are registered at the same address in Sofia. The two investment proposals of the same investor are made in neighboring properties in Devnya.
Close to the construction site is the so-called ViK-Devnya water supply zone, which currently supplies drinking water not only to neighboring settlements, but also to the city of Varna. It is unclear how hazardous and non-hazardous waste will affect the quality of the area’s already limited water resources, commented the environmental organization.
For us, as an organization that works for the protection of the environment, waste incineration is the last resort, to be considered only after the exhaustion of all other methods of waste treatment, says the opinion.
An objection to the investment proposal of the company “Ecosonic” was sent by the association “Breathe, Devnya”.
