A protest against the development of green spaces in Varna is planned on 22 May (Saturday) at 11 am in the park “Znamenata” in the district of Varna. “Briz” (under the Monument of Bulgarian-Soviet Friendship).
With the destruction of green spaces and parks, Varna is facing an environmental catastrophe, according to the event’s Facebook page.
“Any excuses that this is construction on private property are baseless and in violation of the law. Entire chapters of the Land Use Planning Act have been criminally ignored to benefit a small group of individuals close to those in power and to serve corporate interests,” protest organizers said. According to them, the Municipal Council continues to turn a blind eye to the destruction of green areas, entire parks and gardens.

They recall the request submitted more than a year ago by citizens and civic organizations to the Municipal Council to hold a local referendum to declare a moratorium on indiscriminate construction in Varna. The response was “complete silence”. “At the same time, uncontrolled construction has continued unabated”, the citizens complain.
During the protest on Saturday, the organizers will present signals to the Ombudsman, the Minister of Regional Development, as well as a request to the Ministry of Regional Development to take immediate action to halt the construction of the building.
