Discussions on topical issues and cinema with “Free” entrance await the citizens of Varna this weekend during the civic forum “Conference on Democracy” at “Nikotea – Warehouse for Culture” (1 Nikola Kanev Street). The opening is at 10 am on 22 February (Saturday).
A special screening of the Bulgarian-German film co-production “Klopka” and a meeting with director Nadezhda Koseva and producer Vladimir Andreev awaits guests at 6.30 pm. Civil rights and environmental protection are the main leitmotif of both the forum and the film to be screened. At the centre of both the conference and the film story is the little man who lives in harmony with nature. The film is set in a village on the banks of the Danube. An investor arrives with a desire to build a nuclear waste dump. The authorities and the people are ready to cooperate. Alexander Trifonov, as Jovo, finds himself alone against the “beasts”.
Trifonov accepts the award for leading actor at the 42nd Golden Rose. During the festival “Klopka” was also awarded for cinematography – by Kiril Prodanov, as well as the special jury award for feature film.
Topics on importing and burning waste, the right to nature, civil struggles and avoiding climate catastrophe will be part of this year’s agenda.
The event is organized for the 11th consecutive year by the Public Center for Environment and Sustainable Development in partnership with For the Earth.
“Originating as an annual civic forum, the ”Conference on Democracy” gives a voice to citizens who have sought their rights through various legal procedures and have encountered irregularities that effectively deprive them of their rights, says Arch. Kalina Miteva (Pavlova), initiator of the event. – Associations of citizens, lawyers, ecologists, architects, journalists, historians, economists and other experts, and in rare cases representatives of political parties and business organizations also participate in the forum, showing the way for cooperation in solving problems.”
