A new Directorate for Ecology and Environmental Protection will be operational in Varna Municipality from March this year. Its creation was voted during a City Council session this week. It will integrate all activities related to waste collection, waste management, air cleanliness and water conservation, including the management of mineral resources. The rationale for increasing the administrative machinery is “better management of environmental processes and, above all, greater control”.

The municipal councilors also adopted the budget for Varna cleanliness for 2020. It will amount to BGN 40.5 million, with BGN 3.3 million more than the funds for 2019. Higher revenues are planned mostly from the newly commissioned new residential buildings, the construction of which is booming this year.

The main item in the plan is the cost of disposal, recycling and utilization of municipal waste. BGN 16.3 million is earmarked for this activity. More than half of them – BGN 9.3 million will cover the separation of garbage at the plant in the village of Ezerovo. It is almost as much cost to Varna residents waste collection and refuse collection. Construction of pockets for containers on the streets is planned to start this year for about BGN 394,000. Another BGN 72,000 will be invested in upgrading the system for control of waste collection, refuse collection and cleaning activities.

This year’s budget also allocates funds for the construction of a second and third cell to the municipal landfill. Cleaning and maintenance of public places are planned for BGN 14.6 million, about BGN 2 million more than in 2019.
