Young people will dismantle old electrical appliances and recycle electronic waste on 18 October at 6 pm at the office of the Public Centre for Environment and Sustainable Development in Varna. The “Recycle Smart” workshop is free to attend, but pre-registration is required here. Anyone is welcome to bring an old laptop, phone, tablet, or small household appliance and learn how to safely disassemble it and what parts can be recycled.
Waste from electrical and electronic equipment is increasing and less than 40% of it is recycled. In about 10 years, the amount of electronic equipment produced in the EU has almost doubled. E-waste collected will amount to 4.9 million tonnes in 2021, according to official figures, which is an average of 11 kg for every EU citizen. This saves the environment and the European economy an average of 1.5 million tonnes of iron, nearly 190 tonnes of copper and 30 tonnes of gold annually. Discarded electronic and electrical equipment contains potentially harmful materials that pollute the environment and increase health risks for people.
The “Recycle Smart” workshop is part of the “Green Fridays for Youth” initiative, which is implemented with the financial support of Varna Municipality. More than 150 participants took part in 20 workshops and lectures organised by the project this summer.
In addition to the association’s office, residents of Varna can invite the eco-workshop to visit their office, school or kindergarten. There are opportunities for off-site training sessions on soap making, straw beehive, insect house, textile recycling or organic farming practices.
Every Friday at the St. “At 14 Sava Radulov Street in Varna you can donate an hour for the environment, bring a glass bottle of perfume or a bottle of deodorant for recycling. For a symbolic donation you can take an old but valuable book or product for a cause and support one of the environmental campaigns of the association.
