In today’s edition of ‘You Ask, We Answer’ we talk to Ilian Iliev about one of Bulgaria’s most precious natural treasures – the Black Sea. Unfortunately, it is facing a number of environmental threats. Three main problems stand out: pollution from human activity, overexploitation of marine resources and global impact on climate.
Can we use the sea as a source of green energy? The answer is yes – through wave energy, underwater wind turbines and even hydrogen sulphide at depth – but there are still scientific and technological steps to be taken to make this a reality.
However, the small steps each of us can take are crucial: separate waste collection, less plastic, care for nature while on holiday and commitment to local environmental policy. Because every piece of rubbish thrown into the environment ends up at sea sooner or later.
