Students from the First Language High School in Varna created a board game about the separate collection of waste. “Box’s travels – the cardboard pizza box is looking for its place. Help her!” is the idea of twelfth-graders profile “Geography and Economics” at the high school. It is aimed at children between the ages of 3 and 11. The goal is to teach them proper separation of waste and recycling accordingly, said Karina Tsvetkova, a student in the 12th grade.

The game contains between 40 and 50 cards with original drawings of waste for the children to distribute in envelopes of different colors corresponding to those of the separate collection containers. A short story is included to keep players intrigued. The main character in it is the cardboard pizza box – Box. A correct answer key is also given.

We have to finish the cards and assemble the whole game, and then – a practical test in kindergartens and primary schools in the city, shared the plans of the team Karina. If the result is good and the interest is high, the game will be released for free use.

“Box” was born as an educational project on the topic of “Ecology”, in which the students involved me and motivated me to support them, said geography teacher Maria Simeonova.

The challenges faced by the authors during its development are the different waste receptacles in each municipality. Because of this fact, they have to change the original idea. The cards are related to the type of waste, not the color of the containers. The task of the players will be to craft the containers themselves depending on what they are in their settlement.

The board game will be packaged in a pizza box. There is an idea to release it in an online version for printing.
With the eco game, students also participate in this year’s Civic Education Olympiad.
