Parents in Varna are demanding the return of schools in kindergartens and schools, suspended in early 2020 with the announcement of the pandemic of Cows 19. They have prepared a petition which has already gathered over 300 signatures. Varna is one of the few places in Bulgaria where an ordinance prohibits the renting of municipal premises to legal entities for educational and cultural activities. This restriction, according to the initiators, deprives their children of opportunities available to their peers in other parts of the country, putting them in an unequal position. As a result, parents are forced to drive their children to tutoring outside of school hours, which increases traffic, costs, and reduces the quality time families can spend together.

The petition urges the City Council to revise the ordinance in question to allow entities to offer supplemental educational activities in kindergartens and schools.

The initiative committee has already held a meeting with Varna Deputy Mayor Pavel Popov. Is there a chance that the children of Varna can once again dance, play sports and learn in amateur schools without creating additional traffic on the streets and taking up their parents’ time?
