1995 is. The world is just as messed up for some as it is ordered for others.

Scientists have discovered the exoplanet 51 Pegasi b: It is the first planet discovered outside the solar system orbiting a star similar to the Sun. This discovery marks the beginning of a new era in space exploration and the search for life beyond Earth.

The war in Bosnia and Herzegovina is in full swing. In Srebrenica, thousands of Muslims are massacred by Serbian forces. The Israeli-Palestinian peace process continues with new negotiations and agreements. The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded to Joseph Rothblatt and the Pugwash organisation for their efforts towards nuclear disarmament.

At the Ernst Happel Stadium in Vienna, Ajax Amsterdam wins the Champions League, defeating AC Milan 1-0. In the world of Formula One, Michael Schumacher wins the world title for the second time with the Benetton-Ford team.

The Guggenheim Museum is opened in Bilbao and becomes one of the world’s most famous landmarks. Since its premiere, Braveheart has won the hearts of audiences and numerous awards, including the Academy Award for Best Picture. And in the music world, the release of Oasis’ “(What’s the Story) Morning Glory?” became one of the most successful albums in British music history.

Bulgaria formally applies to join the European Union, despite the political crisis that has engulfed the country. The country continues to struggle with high inflation and unemployment.

At the local elections for mayor of the 301 thousand Varna was re-elected Hristo Kirchev (SDS). The local government concludes a friendship and cooperation agreement with the second largest city in Ukraine – Kharkiv (1.4 million people).

On 15 December, the journey of the “Public Centre for Environment and Sustainable Development” (PCESD) – the oldest, still existing, environmental organization in the recent history of the sea capital – begins in Varna. Several students from the Faculty of Ecology and Environmental Protection of the Technical University gathered in one of the university’s auxiliary sheds and founded an association. They set themselves the goal of working to raise the ecological awareness of the citizens of Varna, support the sustainable development of the region and protect the environment.
