On April 22, the world marks Earth Day—an international initiative dedicated to nature conservation and a conscious attitude toward the planet we live on. An interesting fact is that Bulgaria is the first country in the world to celebrate Earth Day. This took place on December 14, 1930, following a proposal by the then Minister of Agriculture and State Domains, Grigor Vasilev.
The initiative enjoyed broad support from other ministers of agriculture across Europe and provided the impetus for the establishment of an International Earth Day. For the first time, Earth Day was officially observed on April 22, 1970, in the USA and Canada, and in 1990, the holiday of our planet was declared an international day, which today unites over 1 billion people in more than 190 countries around the world.
Earth Day is not only a moment for awareness, but also for action. An occasion to be more responsible consumers and active citizens. The true value of this day lies in the opportunity to build new habits that we can apply throughout the year, setting an example and providing inspiration for other people.
In Varna and across the country, Earth Day is traditionally observed with various initiatives organized by institutions, schools, non-governmental organizations, and civic groups. These often include cleanup campaigns, recycling drives, the planting of vegetation, educational activities, as well as activities involving children and youth.
