On 21 March we celebrate International Glacier Day, an important initiative that draws attention to the state of these majestic natural formations and their role in the global ecosystem. In 2025, the United Nations (UN) declared an International Year of Glacier Conservation and 21 March became World Glacier Day. This is a clear sign of the growing concern about climate change and its impact on the planet’s water resources.

Bulgaria has two remaining micro-glaciers – rare natural phenomena that are relics of the last ice age. Sneznik Glacier – located in the Golemiya Kazan Cirque, below Vihren Peak, it is the southernmost glacier in Europe. Its ice mass does not melt completely even in summer. Banski Sukhodol Glacier – the larger of the two, also located in the Pirin Mountains.

These glaciers are valuable indicators of climate change and are the subject of scientific research. Even if you live far from the mountains and glaciers, your actions can contribute to their conservation. Reducing your carbon footprint is a key factor in combating climate change, and here are a few ways each of us can help:

What you can do:

  • Use energy-saving appliances.
  • Turn off lights and appliances when you don’t need them.
  • Insulate your home to reduce energy use for heating and cooling.
  • Prefer walking, cycling or public transport.
  • Drive economically and avoid unnecessary air travel.
  • Avoid plastic-wrapped food
  • Choose local and seasonal foods.
  • Reduce food waste.
  • Buy less and choose long-lasting products.
  • Avoid excess packaging and recycle.
  • Inform yourself and spread knowledge about climate change.
  • Support organisations and policies aimed at protecting the environment.
  • Participate in local initiatives and awareness-raising campaigns.

Glaciers are key to climate regulation and fresh water provision. Their melting contributes to rising sea levels which threaten coastal areas. Every little action makes a difference – by working together, we can protect these natural treasures and reduce their harmful impact on the environment.

We at the Public Center for Environment and Sustainability urge you to take at least one of the steps described today. Share with us a photo of your action, and in return you will receive a small but valuable gift – a notebook, a symbol of sustainability and care for nature.

Together we can make a difference!
