The endangered species of bird – papunyak, was caught by the lens of Varna residents. The bird was spotted in the city about 300 meters away from the Technical University in the direction of Vinitsa. At ecovarna.info@gmail.com we received information from our reader that the same bird was spotted in the area Manastirski rid, above Sunny Day.
The population of the parrot, also known in our country as a gypsy rooster, is declining worldwide. The bird has been declared a protected species by law, both in Bulgaria and in most European countries.
“Currently, the species is noticeable because it is a large migratory and when breeding it stays close to humans,” said Ivaylo Ivanov, chairman of the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds and a member of the PECSD. One of its habitats are old houses. However, during migration it can be seen in all sorts of atypical places, said Ivaylo Ivanov. It is more common in Bulgaria than in other European countries.
How do you recognize him?
The hoof reaches 26-28 cm in length. The beak is long and slightly curved downwards. The back and wings are mainly black in color and wide white stripes, and the neck and head – in ocher with orange-brown shades. In excitement or fright, the bird straightens a crest of elongated feathers on the head, which end in black tips. Hence its name “gypsy rooster”.
It nests singly in cavities of trees, rocks, stone walls and piles of stones, earth slopes. Breeding begins in the second half of April and May. Lays 5-8 eggs, which the female incubates for 16-18 days.
According to the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds, the population of our country is estimated at 8-15,000 pairs. Spring migration is in March-April, and autumn one in August-September.
